Any tasting notes that appear against the beers are the personal opinions of the authors. If the authors disagree on any aspect then their initials appear before their individual opinion.

Abbaye de Vaucelles - 7.5% alc/vol

Comments - First brewed 1990. Brewed for the organisation that is renovating the abbey buildings. They get a donation for each bottle sold.
Tasting Notes - Rich, fruity and distinctly bitter Bière de Garde character but lacking that "something" needed to lift it above the others.

L'Atrébate Ambrée

Comments - Brewed for Brasserie L'Atrébate to the recipe of Pierre Bécu, ex of Brasserie Bécu.

L'Atrébate Blonde

L'Atrébate Spéciale Noel - 7.5% alc/vol

Bière de Mars - 5.8% alc/vol View Label 13 Kb

Tasting Notes - A beer with a very strong fruity character and perhaps a little too sweet and "sticky" for its own good. This is to a certain extent offset by the resiny hops. Very definitely a different Bière de Mars and one that has to be admired. We think it will get difficult to drink as it gets older.

Bière de Stenay - n/s alc/vol View Label 13 Kb

Comments - Brewed (or labelled) for the Beer Museum at Stenay.
Tasting Notes - A full, fairly complex, extremely fruity amber ale with bags of malt. The hops are there but dominated by the fruity malt.

Bière des Sans Culottes - 7% alc/vol View Label 9 Kb

Comments - First brewed 1983.
Tasting Notes - Has good depth for a filtered beer which marks it out as something a little different. A wineyness develops and increases with age as the rest of the palate mellows. JW: For me, the bittersweet earthiness prevents it being a great beer. KR: Though not especially complex it has many layers of taste.

Blanche de Cambrai - 5% alc/vol

Comments - First brewed Jan 1999
Tasting Notes - Starts a bit dull but then develops into quite a lemony wheat beer. Nose doesn't improve a great deal. Ends as quite a satisfying wheat beer with plenty of wheat lifted by the citric.

La Blonde du Hainaut - 6% alc/vol

Brassin Robespierre - 7.5% alc/vol View Label 11 Kb

Comments - First brewed 1994. Brewed to commemorate the bicentenary of Robespierre's execution. Apparently the same beer as Sans Culottes yet 0.5% stronger. Only brewed occasionally.
Tasting Notes - A surprisingly strong alcohol character dominates this relatively complex beer that is ostensibly a blonde but has a darker character. KR: Very bitter and fruity.

Bürgersbier - 5% alc/vol View Label 11 Kb

Tasting Notes - JW: Aged sweet pale malt with the sweetness balanced by some hop. KR: The label suggests it will be a pilsner but it is definitely a non-special bière de garde.

La CaB

Comments - Brewed for Brasserie La Rondelle in Senozan

La Choulette Ambrée - 7.5% alc/vol View Label 11 Kb

Comments - First brewed 1981.
Tasting Notes - Interesting very full taste that can get a bit much on the second glass.

La Choulette Blonde - 7.5% alc/vol View Label 10 Kb

Comments - Much, much better drunk young.
Tasting Notes - A unique and unusual taste highlight the depth and character of this beer which has a surprisingly honeyed element. However, it is very thick and rich which makes it difficult to drink in any volume as the taste, and particularly the finish just get too much for you.

La Choulette Brune - 7.5% alc/vol

Comments - First brewed 2001.

La Choulette de Noël - 7% alc/vol View Label 11 Kb

Comments - Prior to 2002 just called Bière de Noël.
Tasting Notes - Interesting, distinctly fruity and malty, bière de garde that is barely different enough to merit the Noël tag.

La Choulette Framboise - 7% alc/vol View Label 11 Kb

Tasting Notes - Very impressive ale that is extremely fruity. The raspberries sit well with the brown ale type base and are enhanced by a slightly acidic fruitiness which does increase a bit with age. Nice texture. Maybe not as complex as some Belgian Framboises but a cracking, intensely fruity beer when drunk young.

La Gambière - 7% alc/vol View Label 11 Kb

Tasting Notes - Strong on malt this beer benefits from a good helping of hops which helps give it some balance.

La Giboulée - 5.8% alc/vol

Comments - Translates as April Showers. Is the bière de Mars for La Rondelle.

La Millénair - 9% alc/vol

Comments - First brewed 1999. Brewed to celebrate the millennium.
Tasting Notes - Excellent strong beer with plenty of alcohol warmth in the rich, slightly fruity pale malt. It is smooth and very full.

La Port du Hainaut Ambrée - 7% alc/vol

Comments - First brewed 2003.

La Port du Hainaut Blonde - 6% alc/vol

Comments - First brewed 2003.

La Ronboise

Comments - Brewed for Brasserie La Rondelle in Senozan

La Rondelle

Comments - Brewed for Brasserie La Rondelle in Senozan

Rubens 2004 - 8.3% alc/vol

Comments - Brewed for the Rubens exhibition in Lille

Stenay Blonde - n/s alc/vol View Label 12 Kb

Comments - Brewed (or Labelled) for The Beer Museum at Stenay.
Tasting Notes - Hardly a traditional French Blonde - very bitter, tannic and tangy. Very full and tasty blonde more reminiscent of some Belgian Blondes.

La Tour d'Ostrevant - 8.3% alc/vol View Label 13 Kb

Comments - First brewed 1996.
Tasting Notes - A very full fruity malt taste and a distinct honey tang do not overcome the strong hop character that is surprisingly evident only in the resiny bitterness. Unusually for a blonde beer it is rewarding as a late evening

La Triboulette - 5% alc/vol View Label 6 Kb

Comments - First brewed 2003.
